2 months and it seems like I've been here for years.

Michigan is giving me the best time ever. 

The nature is different. The grass seems more green, and the flowers’ smell is a sweet fragrance. Lake's reflection makes seem the sky closer. Your heart seems to beat faster, and you can feel clearly your energy inside yourself.

Everything is amplified. 

Far from my land, I finally am myself. 

Far from my land, I clear in my mind who I am.

Among your people, your family, your friends you see your identity with other people's eyes. But when you are by yourself, there’s only you. 

And I feel great. I’ve never feel so strong, happy and proud. 

Everyday is a new day. Everyday you do something different, you learn new things, you make new friends and create new memories. Everyday is a challenge. 

I don’t say it’s easy, because it’s fucking difficult such as it’s fucking awesome! But I am stronger than anything. 

Everyday you meet people who are living your same experience, and together you feel invincible!

This experience is giving me the opportunity to discover sides of me that I couldn't see. Here you feel like you can try everything, you can think and say whatever you want...the fact is we don't have to forget that we can always do it, everytime, everywhere.

No matter where you are, no matter with who you are, we should always feel so free to express ourselves. 

I didn't learn it in America, but I learnt to take off some stupid limits that we are used to put for protecting us. 

But if you don't take risks, you don't enjoy the life. It is not worth it.

Play it safe is boring.

...and I've never been a boring person. I will never be.

2 mesi e sembra che sia qui da anni.

Il Michigan mi sta regalando il migliore periodo della mia vita.

La natura è diversa. L'erba sembra più verde, e l'odore dei fiori è una dolce fragranza . Il riflesso del lago fa sembrare il cielo più vicino. Il tuo cuore sembra battere più velocemente, e puoi sentire chiaramente l’energia che c’è in te.

Tutto è amplificato.

Lontano dalla mia terra, finalmente sono me stessa.

Tra la tua gente, la tua famiglia, i tuoi amici vedi la tua identità con gli occhi delle altre persone. Ma quando sei da solo con te stesso, ci sei solo tu.

E mi sento splendidamente. Non mi sono mai sentita così forte, felice e orgogliosa.

Ogni giorno è un nuovo giorno. Ogni giorno fai qualcosa di diverso, impari cose nuove, fai nuove amicizie e crei nuovi ricordi.

Ogni giorno è una sfida. 

Non dico che sia facile, perché è fottutamente difficile come è fottutamente fantastico! 

Ma io sono più forte di ogni altra cosa. 

Ogni giorno incontri nuove persone che vivono la tua stessa esperienza, e insieme ti senti e

invincibile!

Questa esperienza mi sta dando l'opportunità di scoprire lati di me che non riuscivo a vedere. Qui ti senti come se tu possa provare tutto, pensare e dire quello che vuoi …il fatto è che non dobbiamo dimenticare che possiamo farlo sempre e ovunque.

Non importa dove sei, non importa con chi sei, dovremmo sempre sentirci così liberi di esprimere noi stessi. 

Non l’ho imparato in America, ma ho imparato a togliere alcuni stupidi limiti che siamo soliti porre per proteggerci.

Ma se non si corrono dei rischi, non ci si gode la vita. E non ne vale la pena.

Giocare sul sicuro è noioso.

n.23 - 30 days left, starting from the beginning. The First Steps! - Mancano 30 giorni, cominciamo dall'inizio. I primi passi.

30 days left for leaving!

I can't wait. If in the past weeks I was a little bit in anxious now I am just excited and ready for starting this amazing experience.
The time is really heavy to stand right now, but only 30 days to leave and I know I can do it!
I realize that the time serves for making you more conscious about your next adventure. Before the match you spend all your time focusing on all the paper and picking a family and you are not able to realize what you are actually doing.
I really needed these months before the departure date.
Besides I am really lucky because I met my host family in Rome in advance! It was a huge luck!
We spent all a day together with my sister and her boyfriend. I really love them! They are amazing, and I couldn't choose better!
My biggest surprise was that I could talk to them openly, with no fear about anything, in a honest way, and this is a very difficult element to create in a relationship!
This meeting just made me more excited about leaving and spending time with them!

Now in this post I am going to explain you step by step what document prepare before or after the interview with the Au Pair In America agency.
Talking about my experience, before the interview I had everything ready and I needed only the approval by agency.
So the agency asks you the follow documents:

- One reference made by a friend or someone who knows you very well;
- Two references made by children's mothers for who you worked as babysitter. They mustn't be relatives, but they can be added in your childcare experience with no reference.
I remind you that the experience as tutor, volunteer and camp counselor are all approved.
- Criminal record;
- Passport;
- Diver's License and High School Diploma;
- Medical Form and Mantoux test;
- Introduction Video for the host families;
- Host Family Letter.


Talking about the references, the agency provides you forms which has to be filled and signed by your referent.
It can be filled directly in English or in your own language and in another copy you will have to translate the reference in English. Both the copies must be signed by your referent.
In the Childcare Reference there are the follow questions:
"How do you know the applicant (employer, family friend, childcare teacher, etc.)?"
"How long has the applicant been employed by you/cared for the children?"
There are also questions about name and gender of children, age and frequency of care.
"Describe any special skills the applicant showed"
They also wanna know how you handle stressful situations and how you adapt to new circumstances.
On the bottom there are the Referee's details (name, telephone number, best times to call, and if the referent knows speaking English), date and signature.

In the Character Reference you will find questions about your personality.
"How do you know the applicant?"
"How long have you known the applicant?"
"How would you describe the applicant's personality?"
Also here they ask how you handle stressful situations and adaptations to new circumstances
"Why would you recommend this applicant as au pair?"
On the bottom there are the Referee's details as for the Childcare Reference, date and signature.

The references must be true! Because the agency will contact the referees for being sure they exist for real and you worked for them.
Most of people wonder which are the questions asked by agency to Referees.
I think it's subjective. I mean it depends on which person you have as representative.
Mine called all of my referents and asked them their name and if they know me! That's it! Nothing more!

Regarding Criminal Record, you can get it doing request to the courthouse. Ask for an appointment, and then you go there after 3 days. Really simple!

About the Passport. It's really important you get it in advance! It takes 20 days for being ready. So as fast as you get it as fast as you can check one thing from the list.

As you know you have to get the Driver's License and the High School Diploma for joining in this program. You can ask for an appointment one or two months before being sure of getting both of them.

The agency will ask you to make filled by your doctor a Medical Form, which it forms by two parts, A and B. I need to fill the first one, and the B will be filled by your doctor.
In this form will be written all your tests made also when you were little, and if you've never done that tests you will have to do it. Especially about the Mantoux test, it's a test that probably you will have to do it.

Regarding the Presentation Video, it has to last max 3 minutes if I remember well. It's important to be yourself and spontaneous! It's not useful if I tell you to be funny or smiling because each person is unique, and you have to behave as you feel inside you.
I can just give some advice how make the video.
If you have a bedroom I suggest to use it as background. Of course it must be tidy up! If you will use the computer's camera, be sure behind you there's some picture or poster, something that can give an idea what you like or you personality.
If you have not a bedroom, I suggest to stay in the living room, always using some picture as background or a color wall or maybe also a window! As you prefer for letting you be comfortable.
If you aren't confident about your English you can write down a speech before recording in front of the camera. Make a list of important point you want to speak of and then just talk!
Who uses Mac I advice to use iMovie free software, it's awesome, and allows you to put some effects in the video.
For Windows users I advice to use Movie Maker software. It's pretty nice and also free!

I think the most important thing in your application is with no doubt your Host Family Letter.
Here as for the video, be yourself. Tell about the most important things for you in your routine, in your life, why it's so important being an Au Pair In America, talk about your experience with children and also about your hobbies!
This is your chance to underline your strength points and what you think it's important to make know to your host family.
Probably your representative will check and correct your letter for being sure there's not any error and will give you some advice for making your letter nicer!

These are all the documents you have to provide at your interview or upload after it!
Usually since you call for an appointment and to that date it spends 1 month more or less, I suggest to start collecting paper for being a step forward once you will do the interview with the agency!

Mancano 30 giorni alla partenza!

Non vedo l'ora! Se nelle ultime settimane ero un po' in ansia ora sono solo entusiasta e pronta per iniziare questa esperienza straordinaria.
Il tempo è diventato pesante da sopportare in questo momento, ma mancano solo 30 giorni...posso resistere!
Mi rendo conto che il tempo serve a renderci più consapevoli della nostra prossima avventura. Prima del Match si passa così tanto tempo a concentrarsi sui documenti da recuperare e sulla selezione della host family che non si è in grado di realizzare ciò che si sta effettivamente realizzando.
Ne ho davvero avuto bisogno di questi mesi prima della partenza.
Inoltre sono stata molto fortunata, perché ho potuto incontrare la mia host family a Roma in anticipo! E' stato fantastico!
Abbiamo trascorso tutta la giornata insieme con mia sorella e il suo ragazzo. Io li adoro!
Sono incredibili, non potevo scegliere di meglio!
La cosa che mi ha colpito maggiormente è stata la libertà con la quale riuscivo a parlare apertamente con loro, senza paura di parlare onestamente, ed è un fattore molto difficile da creare in un rapporto!
Questo incontro mi ha reso solamente più entusiasta di partire e trascorrere del tempo insieme a loro!

Ora, in questo post ho intenzione di spiegare passo per passo quali documenti preparare da portare prima o a seguito del colloquio con l'agenzia Au Pair In America.
Con riferimento alla mia esperienza, ho preparato tutto ciò che occorreva prima del colloquio così che avevo solamente bisogno dell'approvazione dell'agenzia.
Allora, l'agenzia ti chiede i seguenti documenti:

- Una referenza fatta da un amico o qualcuno che ti conosce molto bene;
- Due referenze fatte dalle mamme dei bambini per le quali hai lavorato come baby sitter. Non devono essere tuoi parenti, nel caso possono essere aggiunti nelle vostre Childcare Experience però senza referenza. Vi ricordo che l'esperienza come tutor, volontario e responsabili nei campi estivi sono tutti validi.
- Precedenti penali - Casellario Giudiziale;
- Passaporto;
- Patente e Diploma di scuola superiore;
- Medical Form e test di Mantoux;
- Video di presentazione;
- Host Letter per la famiglia.


Per quanto riguarda le referenze, l'agenzia fornisce dei moduli da far compilare dal referente.
Può essere compilato direttamente in inglese o nella propria lingua, in quest'ultimo caso in un'altra copia dovrete poi tradurre la referenza in lingua inglese. Entrambe le copie devono essere firmate dal referente.
Nella Childcare Reference sono presenti le seguenti domande:
"Come conosci l'applicante (datore di lavoro, amico di famiglia, insegnate di childcare, ecc )?"
"Per quanto tempo ha lavorato per te/curato i bambini?"
Ci sono anche domande riguardanti il nome e il sesso dei bambini, l'età e la frequenza di cura.
"Descrivere particolari abilità che l'applicante ha mostrato"
Inoltre vogliono sapere secondo il referente se riuscite a gestire le situazioni di stress e come vi adattereste a nuove circostanze.
Sul fondo del form ci sono i dettagli del referente (nome, numero di telefono, ore in cui preferisce essere contattato e se il referente parla l'inglese), data e firma.

Nel Character Reference troverete delle domande sulla vostra personalità.
"Come conosci l'applicante?"
"Da quanto tempo conosci il candidato?"
"Come descriveresti la personalità del candidato?"
Anche qui chiedono secondo il referente come pensa possiate gestire le situazioni di stress e come vi adattereste a nuove circostanze.
"Perché consiglieresti questo applicante come au pair?"
Sul fondo ci sono dettagli del referente come nel Childcare Reference, la data e la firma.

Le referenze devono essere vere! Perché l'agenzia si metterà in contatto con i vostri referenti per essere sicura che siano reali e che abbiate lavorato davvero per loro.
La maggior parte delle persone si chiede quali sono le domande poste dall'agenzia ai referenti.
Penso che sia soggettivo. Voglio dire, dipende da chi avete come rappresentante/responsabile.
La mia ha chiamato tutti i miei referenti e ha chiesto loro il nome e se mi conoscono. Tutto qui! Non ha chiesto nulla più.

Per quanto riguarda il Casellario Giudiziale, si può ottenere facendo richiesta al tribunale. Si invia la richiesta online, (per chi è di Milano vedere qui: http://www.procura.milano.giustizia.it/casellario.html) dopo tre giorni lavorativi il casellario è pronto per essere ritirato. Bisogna richiedere il "Certificato Penale" per uso "amministrativo".
Al tribunale bisogna portare una marca da bollo da 16€ più una da 3,54€.

Riguardo il Passaporto invece è molto importante ottenerlo in tempo, io consiglierei di richiederlo prima del colloquio. Ci vogliono all'incirca 20 giorni dalla data di richiesta.
Si può chiedere appuntamento online da questo sito: https://www.passaportonline.poliziadistato.it/
Alla questura bisogna portare:

• il modulo di richiesta che stamperete una volta preso appuntamento sul sito posto precedentemente;
• 2 fototessere formato 4x4;
• una marca da bollo da € 40,29;
• ricevuta di versamento di € 42,50, intestato al Ministero dell’Economia e Finanze – Dipartimento del Tesoro;
• la vostra carta d'identità.

Come saprete dovete ottenere la patente di guida e il Diploma di Maturità per poter partecipare ad Au Pair In America. Se il diploma non è ancora disponibile potete fare la scansione della certificazione di diploma che bisogna richiedere presso la vostra scuola.

L'agenzia vi chiederà di far compilare dal vostro medico di famiglia un Medical Form, composto da due parti: A e B. C'è bisogno che voi compilate la prima parte, mentre la B sarà compilato dal medico.
In questo modulo verranno scritti tutti i test effettuati anche quando eravate piccoli, e se non avete mai fatto qualche test dovrete effettuarli, e sicuramente dovrete rifare il test di Mantoux, solitamente lo si fa alle elementari ma deve essere fatto massimo 6 mesi prima della data del colloquio.

Per quanto riguarda il video di presentazione, che deve durare max 3 minuti se ricordo bene, è importante essere se stessi e spontanei! E' inutile se vi dicessi di apparire divertente e sorridente perché ogni persona è fatta a sé, e ci si deve comportare come ci si sente di farlo.
Posso solo dare qualche consiglio su come fare il video.
Se si dispone di una camera da letto vi suggerisco di usarla come sfondo. Naturalmente deve essere messa a posto! Se si intende utilizzare la fotocamera del computer, assicuratevi che dietro di voi ci sia qualche foto o poster, qualcosa che possa dare un'idea di ciò che vi piace o la vostra personalità.
Se non si dispone di una camera da letto, suggerisco di stare in salotto, sempre utilizzando alcuni quadri come sfondo o una parete colorata colore o magari anche una finestra! Come preferite, in modo da permettervi di sentirvi a vostro agio.
Se non siete sicuri del vostro inglese potete scrivere un piccolo discorso prima di registrarlo. Fate una lista dei punti importanti di cui volete parlare e poi registrate!
Chi utilizza Mac consiglio di usare il fantastico iMovie software gratuito, è impressionante, e ti permette di mettere degli effetti nel video.
Per gli utenti di Windows consiglio di usare Movie Maker. E 'molto bello e gratuito.

Sono dell'idea che l'elemento più importante della vostra application sia la vostra Host Family Letter.
Qui, come per il video, il consiglio è essere se stessi.
Raccontate le cose più importanti per voi della vostra routine, della vostra vita, perché è così importante diventare un Au Pair in America. Parlate della vostra esperienza con i bambini e anche i vostri hobby!
Questa è la vostra occasione per sottolineare i vostri punti di forza e cosa pensate sia importante far conoscere alla host family.
Probabilmente il vostro rappresentante controllerà e correggerà la vostra lettera per essere sicuro che non ci sia alcun errore e vi darà alcuni consigli per migliorare la vostra lettera!

Questi sono tutti i documenti necessari fornire durante il colloquio o da caricare in seguito!
Di solito da quando si chiama per un appuntamento passa all'incirca 1 mese, vi suggerisco di iniziare a procurarvi i documenti per essere un passo avanti quando farete il colloquio con l'agenzia.

n.19 - Become an Au Pair in America

In the last post I talked about following our
dreams, and it's the choice I made few months ago.
I took a great decision for my future: I decided to become an Au Pair in America.

I felt the need of changing something in my life, I felt the need to grow up, to be stronger than ever.
Suddenly it was clear what I had to do.

December 2013

I decided to contact an agency which, once paid, becomes your sponsor for the USA.
My agency is APIA: Au Pair In America.
The local representatives are really kind and helpful,  they support you step by step, as people in the main office in London.

The first thing to do is: take an appointment with the agency.
You need an agency for working legally in the USA as Au Pair.

My local representative gave me the appointment for two months later (a lot of times in which I decided to work as babysitter): February 2014.
In the meantime I spent my time filling my online application. It was pretty fun actually, I can't say the same for all the bureaucratic files: passport, criminal records, high school diploma, medical form (doing all necessary vaccinations such as tuberculosis) and references of mom for whom I worked as babysitter.

Finally the day has come!
I went to the agency, I took no documents (because I already completed my application online) but only money for letting start the selection process (180€), after few questions and checked my online application I did a psychological test, really really simple and there's not a right or wrong answer, it is useful for testing our consistency and personality.
Everything was perfect!
I came back home and I couldn't wait to receive the confirm that my profile was online. I waited only one day. They did everything very quickly.

TIP: My advice is to prepare all the documents you need before the first interview, then the process will be faster!

I did only one interview in all the period.

I was so excited!

Time for picking a host family. Was it so simple?

I waited only 5 days before the first family came forward. It was amazing! They were from Washington DC with two beautiful kids, 8 years old and 11 years old.

The host mom was very kind to me. We did two Skype call, I felt as they were the right one! 

Could I be so lucky?

After the last call, she told me that they chose another Au Pair. 

I was really sad about their decision, because I really liked that family. I am still in touch with the host mom, because she treated me in a lovely way.

Then I waited about one week before another family contacted me. It wasn't the right one. I felt this.

So I waited again.

I was really afraid that nobody would contact me. It's a common fear.

I want to guarantee to everybody that there's the right family for you! You will leave sooner or later, don't be afraid!

TIP: Make a nice video and letter for the host family is the most important thing. They really love videoclips and funny stuffs! Be creative!

15th March 2014

I got in touch with 4 families up to this day.
The fifth comes during the afternoon. They are from Metro Detroit, a suburb of Detroit in Michigan.
I run to open my email, and I am surprise when I see that the email is all in Italian!
I figure out that the host mom is Italian like me, she teaches Italian in the University of Michigan, but the rest of the family only speak English (fortunately).
We set a Skype call for that evening, and during the call also my parents had the opportunity to speak to her in Italian. We felt like if we knew for ages!
The host dad is so sweet as well. They have four kids: the younger she is 2 years old and the oldest she is 9 years old, the other two are both male! Two girls and two boys! So nice!
I prompt loved the spirit of their house and the fact that I would be their first Au Pair!
I understood that it was the right one!
We both chose each other at the first Skype call!
We decided to MATCH!
...with my departure date, that they decided to anticipate it later (the agency had already sent me the package with the Placement Letter in which there was the wrong date, but it's fine they prompt sent me the right one by email. About the DS2019 document is valid up to 30 days early those that are on it.).

So, my departure date is: 16th June!

On next Monday I logged in my profile and I saw new changes. I could see the placement information, the address of the family and its application.
The next step were:
- Get Visa,
- Get International Driver's license
- Pay the agency

Still now I can't explain how I feel. It's a feeling that you have to try for understanding!


20th March 2014

The package from the agency has arrived!
Inside I found all the instructions for getting the visa, agency invoice, documents to give to the US Embassy and an Au Pair Brochure.
I waited sometimes for processing everything and calling the agency for having further details.
After be sure about the next steps I started to fill my VISA application, it's online!
A lot of questions, some of them are funny (like: have you ever joined in torturing people? Are you a terrorist?...yes, right...) other ones are boring (like: previous job, actual job (if you had or have one), your education, details about your family, contacts etc.).
It's a little bit long as application, you can decide to edit it later, but I advice to do it at once.
Then it's time to take an appointment to the US Embassy!

TIP: Don't be nervous about anything. You can always email your local representative for every doubts or also email the London Office. I've always chose the second option. They are really efficient. 

About Visa Application you should have all the instructions you need. Otherwise make a call to your LR or asking support to other Au Pair! They are really useful and kind, especially they can understand your anxiety!

I arrived in front of the Embassy at 8:35am, my appointment was at 9:00am. Unfortunately there was a long queue!
I entered only after one hour and half: at 9:50am!
Guess when did I go out? 10:00am
It took only 10 minutes for doing the visa! Unbelievable. Fortunately it was sunny!
The Embassy can be a "scaring" place. It's not. Be relaxed, and breathe deep. The soldier are really useful, you can ask information to them if you have doubts.
That afternoon I received an email by the Embassy:

The U.S. Department of State Consulate has released document related to your Visa application to our courier DHL. On average, it takes one to two business days for the shipment to be available from the time you receive this notice.

Wow!
Already done?
Amazing!

My official countdown starts: 80 days left!

Nel post precedente ho parlato di inseguire i propri sogni, ed è proprio la scelta che ho fatto qualche mese fa.
Ho preso una grande decisione per il mio futuro: ho deciso di diventare un Au Pair in America.

Improvvisamente era chiaro quello che dovevo fare.

Ho deciso di contattare un'agenzia che,una volta pagata, diventa il tuo sponsor per gli USA .
La mia agenzia è APIA: Au Pair in America .
I rappresentanti locali sono molto gentili e disponibili, ti supportano passo per passo, come il personale che lavora nella sede principale a Londra.

La prima cosa da fare è: prendere un appuntamento con l'agenzia.
Avete bisogno di un agenzia per lavorare legalmente negli Stati Uniti come Au Pair.

La mia rappresentante locale mi diede appuntamento per due mesi dopo (davvero un sacco di tempo, durante il quale decisi di lavorare come babysitter ed accumulare ore con i bambini): febbraio 2014 .
Nel frattempo spesi del tempo a riempire la mia application on-line. E 'stato abbastanza divertente in realtà, non posso dire lo stesso per tutte le pratiche burocratiche: passaporto, casellario giudiziario, diploma di scuola superiore, medical form (fare tutte le vaccinazioni necessarie, ho dovuto fare il test Mantoux perché l'ultimo era troppo datato), patente e le referenze di tutte le mamme per i quali ho lavorato come baby sitter.

Febbraio 2014

Finalmente il giorno è arrivato!
Mi sono recata in agenzia, non ho portato con me nessun documento (perché avevo già completato la mia domanda on-line), ma solo i soldi per far avviare il processo di selezione (180 €).
Dopo alcune domande e aver controllato la mia domanda on-line ho fatto un test psicologico davvero molto semplice a cui non c'è risposta giusta o sbagliata, serve solamente a testare la coerenza e personalità del candidato.
E' andato tutto alla perfezione!
Sono tornata a casa e non vedevo l'ora di ricevere la conferma che il mio profilo era online. Ho aspettato un solo giorno. Hanno fatto tutto molto velocemente.

SUGGERIMENTO: Il mio consiglio è quello di preparare tutti i documenti necessari prima del primo colloquio, così il processo sarà più veloce!

Ho fatto solo un colloquio in tutto l'arco di tempo.

Ero così emozionata!
Si poteva dare il via alla ricerca della host family. Era così semplice?
Cominciai a chiedere ad altre Au Pair dopo quanto tempo la prima famiglia si fosse fatta sentire, avevo la paura che nessuno si sarebbe interessato al mio profilo.
Ho aspettato solo 5 giorni prima che una famiglia si fece avanti.
La famiglia era incredibile! Erano di Washington DC e avevano due bellissimi bambini: 8 anni e 11 anni.
La host mom era gentilissima e dolcissima. Abbiamo fatto due chiamate con Skype, e ebbi la sensazione che fosse la famiglia giusta!
Potevo essere così fortunata da averla trovata al primo colpo?
Dopo l'ultima chiamata però lei mi comunicò che avevano scelto un'altra ragazza alla pari.
Ero davvero triste per quella decisione, perché mi piacevano davvero, mi ero già affezionata. Anche se successivamente realizzai che era anche l'entusiasmo e l'emozione del "processo di selezione" che mi aveva parecchio esaltato.
Sono ancora in contatto con la host mom, mi ha trattata in un modo impeccabile.
Poi ho aspettato circa una settimana prima che un'altra famiglia si mettesse in contatto. Non era quella giusta. Lo percepii.
Così aspettai ancora.
Avevo davvero paura che nessuno si sarebbe più messo in contatto con me. E' una paura comune.
Ma ci tengo ad assicurare tutti che lì fuori c'è la famiglia giusta per voi! Partirete prima o poi, non abbiate paura!

SUGGERIMENTO: Fate un bel video e una lettera di presentazione che colpisca, è la cosa più importante del vostro profilo. Le famiglie amano i video e cose divertenti! Siate creativi!

Fino a questo giorno si erano messe in contatto con me quattro famiglie.
La quinta arriva quel pomeriggio. E' una famiglia di un sobborgo di Detroit nel Michigan.
Corro ad aprire la mia email, e rimango sorpresa quando vedo che l'email è interamente in italiano!
Scopro che la host mom è italiana come me e insegna italiano presso l'Università del Michigan, ma il resto della famiglia parla solo inglese (per fortuna).
Organizziamo una Skype call per quella sera, durante la quale anche i miei genitori hanno l'opportunità di parlare con lei in italiano. Sembrava ci conoscessimo da sempre!
Anche l'host dad è dolce. Hanno quattro figli: la più piccola ha 2 anni e la più grande 9 anni, gli altri due sono entrambi maschi di 6 e 8 anni. Due bambine e due maschietti! Perfetto!
Ho subito amato lo spirito che vive in casa loro e il fatto che io sarei la loro prima Au Pair!
Ho capito che era quella giusta! Questa volta ho potuto anche confrontare le emozioni provate rispetto alla prima famiglia sentita. Non c'è confronto. Sicuramente questa è quella adatta a me!
Entrambi ci siamo scelti alla prima Skype call!
E abbiamo deciso di fare il MATCH!
...e la mia data di partenza, che in un secondo momento hanno deciso di anticipare (l'agenzia mi aveva già inviato il plico con la Placement Letter in cui c'era la data sbagliata, ma mi hanno subito inviato quella giusta tramite email. Invece il documento DS2019 è valido fino a 30 giorni prima delle date indicate sullo stesso).

Quindi, la mia data di partenza è: il 16 giugno!

Il lunedì successivo collegandomi al mio profilo ho visto le nuove modifiche apportate dall'agenzia. Potevo vedere le informazioni del placement, l'indirizzo della famiglia e la sua application.
I passi successivi sono:
- Ottenere il visto,
- Ottenere la licenza di guida internazionale,
- Pagare il restante all'agenzia (consiglio di comprare anche i pacchetti assicurativi aggiuntivi).

Tuttora non riesco a spiegare come mi sento. E' una sensazione che bisogna vivere per capire!

Il plico dall'agenzia è arrivato!
Dentro ho trovato tutte le istruzioni per ottenere il visto, la fattura dell'agenzia, i documenti da portare in Ambasciata per il rilascio del visto e una brochure del programma Au Pair.
Ho aspettato qualche giorno durante i quali ho elaborato tutto e chiamato l'agenzia per avere ulteriori dettagli.
Dopo aver avuto la certezza circa i passi successivi ho compilato il Visa Application che è online.
Bisogna rispondere ad un sacco di domande, alcune sono divertenti (del tipo: Avete mai partecipato alla tortura di altri individui? Sei un terrorista? ...sì, certo come no...), altre sono noiose (ad esempio: il lavoro precedente, quello attuale (se avete mai lavorato o lavorate), il percorso di studi, i dettagli sulla vostra famiglia, contatti ecc).
E 'un po' lunga come application, è possibile decidere di modificarlo e completarlo in un secondo momento, ma io consiglio di farlo tutto subito.
Poi è il momento di prendere appuntamento all'Ambasciata degli Stati Uniti.

SUGGERIMENTO : Non c'è alcun bisogno di essere nervosi. Potete sempre contattare il vostro rappresentate locale o l'ufficio di Londra tramite email. Io ho sempre scelto la seconda opzione, li reputo molto efficienti.

Dovreste avere tutte le istruzioni necessarie per la compilazione del Visa Application. In caso contrario, chiamate il vostro RL o chiedete supporto ad altre Au Pair! Sono tutte gentilissime e disponibili, proprio perché anche loro hanno vissuto o stanno vivendo la vostra stessa ansia!

Arrivata all'Ambasciata di Milano alle 08:35, il mio appuntamento era alle 09:00. Purtroppo c'era una coda lunghissima! Meno male che c'era il sole!
Sono riuscita ad entrare solo dopo un'ora e mezza: alle 09:50!
Indovinate quando sono uscita fuori? Alle 10:00.
Ci sono voluti solo 10 minuti per fare il visto! Incredibile!
L'ambasciata può essere un luogo che mette soggezione. Siate rilassati e tutto andrà bene. I militari all'esterno dell'edificio sono davvero utili, potete chiedere informazioni a loro se avete dei dubbi.
Quel pomeriggio ricevetti un'email da parte dell'Ambasciata:

Il Dipartimento di Stato degli Stati Uniti ha rilasciato il documento relativo alla vostra domanda di visto al nostro corriere DHL . In media, ci vogliono 1-2 giorni lavorativi per la spedizione dal momento in cui si riceve questo avviso.

Wow !
Già fatto?
Fantastico!

Il mio countdown ufficiale inizia ora: mancano 80 giorni!

n.18 - Follow your dream or play it safe?

In this post I'm going to talk about our dreams, dreams that often become our goals, and sometimes they keep being alive only in our minds.
In both of this case we are winners, because at least we have a dream.
It happens that people who have not one, they try to look for it through their friends, their parents, their brothers or sisters.
The truth is our dreams can born only inside us, and if we haven't them, maybe it means that we already have everything we need.

As time passes, dreams reflect what we want to do when we grow up, and we often find ourselves in front of a choice: choosing for a stable and safe job or following the dream, doing what we love?

It's always a tough decision. Sometimes you can stress yourself out, trying to pick which is the best for you, asking advice to who know you for a life, and going back to the square one, because who can take the decision is only us.

I don't judge anyone, either the choices made. I think we do what we feel, what make us happy. 

Before act, we feel stuck, because we are afraid to do a mistake, and regret it in the future.

First, all the experience we do, can come in handy for our projects and in several situations;

Second, we can change our position when we want, doing more sacrifices and believe in us more than ever. I've known a 35-years-old woman, who quit her job as lawyer because she understood it wasn't a suitable job for her, and she decided to take a second degree in pedagogy. Indeed she told me that she has always felt this feeling inside that made her understand it wasn't the right way. Plus she was a really good lawyer, but is also true that she's good in everything. For that it was hard to make a decision. (A/N. A really strong personality);

Third, if you take a choice and after few years you understand it was the wrong one, you can change in a short time. 

The rule number one is: Believe in yourself.

You need to be the first person to believe in and trust your feelings!

On the contrary, who chooses to follow the dream path doesn't have to be afraid to doesn't find a job, to waste time, to change minds on the way, to think that will never earn money enough for living.

Just do it! 

But if the worst comes to the worst, you tried! 

You can be proud of you in any case.

Trying to reach our dream can't be a waste of time! Never can be! It will be always an uphill road!

There will be always a result. Especially a moral one.

You don't be afraid if other people don't agreed with you, they aren't you. Perhaps they can think to know what is the best for you, but they don't.

Only you can know it.

Only you can make this choice.

The rule number two is: make a choice is the first thing of which you have to be proud.

It means that you want only the best for your life.

That's the moment in which we discover who we really are, and what we really want for our future.

We take our risks. We grow up, no matter the age, you never stop growing.

Eventually we have to, and the impact can be shocking.

But we have always our dreams that keep us alive and full of hopes for a better future.

The last rule but not the least is: don't give up your dreams. Let your imagination run. Always.

You can always get better.
